A respected furniture designer and manufacturer, Sing Bee Enterprise Co., Ltd. Is now taking advantage of its solid manufacturing experience to expand its array of product lines. One of Taiwan's top three office-system furniture manufacturers, Sing Bee has recently jumped into children's furniture.

The company, brought to life in 1988, started operations making office-partition units in a 2,160-square-foot workshop. Today the firm has two plants in its home base of Nantou County, central Taiwan.

Adding to its partition line, the firm began producing innovative, high-quality office furniture, having seen the opportunity in the international marketplace. It focuses on multifunctional models, including such items as office desks and file cabinets that can be flexibly arranged to make the most efficient use of office space.

Late last year Sing Bee unveiled a new series of reading-room furniture for children. The new models are specially designed to match kids' physical development; for example, its desk models feature a top that can be tilted, and the height of the legs can be adjusted.

The company also recently introduced two other series, television cabinets and SOHO (small office, home office) computer desks.

The children's furniture and TV cabinets are produced to U.S. and European regulatory standards and user tastes, and are mainly exported to those markets. Company management says it can also provide the same models in smaller format to meet the needs of Japanese end-users, who generally live in smaller, more compact living spaces.

Finally, the firm has recently added partition units of 3cm in thickness to its line; most competitors, management says, offer only standard 5.5cm and 8cm versions. The new models are made of iron plate and have aluminum frames. Their thinness makes them especially suitable for smaller rooms where space is at a premium, and their innovative design allows for easy assembly requiring less in the way of hand-tools than competing models.

In 1993 Sing Bee won the prestigious "It's Very Well Made in Taiwan" award sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and in the same year received the "Innovative Design Prize" sponsored by the China External Trade Development Council (CETRA; now TAITRA, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council). The firm earned ISO-9002 certification in 1996.
