Tong-Tai Machine & Tool Co. is one of Taiwan's leading manufacturers of high-added-value industrial machines, concentrating on developing and manufacturing production equipment for the automobile parts, mold-making, and PCB (printed circuit board) industries.

The company's current line of products encompasses high-speed vertical-machining centers, vertical column-type machining centers, high-speed PCB drilling machines, high-speed drilling & tapping machines for aluminum magnesium alloy used in the 3C (computers, communications, and consumer electronics) industries, high-precision horizontal CNC machining centers, and precision CNC lathes.

Tong-Tai has concentrated on enhancing the performance of its products over the past several years; and partly as a result, reports deputy manager Y.H. Hsieh, the company has enjoyed a high growth in sales of its mold-making machines and vertical machining centers. In the fourth quarter of last year, sales of special-purpose machines, horizontal machining centers, and machines for making magnesium-alloy parts were unexpectedly good.

Thanks to booming sales of whole-line equipment for the auto parts and mold-making industries, the company figures that its performance this year will be outstanding as well.

Company officials claim that their PCB drilling machines can compete with top-grade products from Japan and Germany in terms of operating accuracy and performance. Monthly production of these machines totals 25 to 30 units (among other products) per month, and overall sales for all of 2005 are expected to reach 350.

The development of core technologies has helped Tong-Tai elevate the accuracy and boost the functions of its products. Already one of the world's top-three suppliers of high-end PCB drilling machines, the company plans to continue improving its position and expanding its global market share by attracting talented technicians from the industrialized countries to help out with technological development.

Tong-Tai president Yen Jui-hsiung reports that his company recently set up a product development center in Japan, which is widely viewed as the global center for precision machinery R&D.

The firm currently exports 55% of its output; and, Yen says, he has received a US$100 million order for machine tools from an American manufacturer for machines needed to set up four production lines. This huge order will help increase the export ratio, as customers from Japan, the United States, and Germany rush to by Tong-Tai's sophisticated machinery.
