2009/05/15 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, May 15, 2009 (CENS)--Boston-Power Inc., which takes a whole-system approach to portable power by designing application-specific rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, recently tied up with local Burnaby International Technology (Mr. Battery brand) to tap the notebook PC battery aftermarket in Taiwan.

Mr. Battery has a 70% share in the local NB PC battery aftermarket.

Christina Lampe-Onnerud, Boston-Power's CEO, pointed out that Taiwan is a global production citadel of notebook PCs. Last year, her company set up an R&D center in Taiwan and began contracting GP Batteries International Ltd. to produce battery cells in Taiwan.

Boston-Power tapped into HP's supply chain in 2008 and now the company supplies batteries for not only HP notebook PCs. This year, the American battery company expects to win also orders from Acer Inc. of Taiwan.

Industry insiders said that global notebook PC battery-cell market has long been dominated by Japanese and Korean companies such as Sony, Panasonic, Sanyo, Samsung etc., which together monopolize 90% of the overall market.

Boston-Power's batteries stress three advantages, including three-year warranty (compared with one year of other brands), larger capacity, and rapid recharging within 30 minutes.

The market evaluated Boston-Power's high-efficiency batteries would change the current notebook PC design from using attached batteries to built-in power modules.
