Taipei, Dec. 25, 2009 (CENS)--Optical-lens maker Genius Electronics Optical Co., Ltd. recently won a contract to supply over 1,000 LED streetlights to several local governments in southern China, marking its first success in tapping mainland China's LED streetlight market after entering into alliance with Philips Lumileds.

Genius Electronics has recently branched out into LED lighting sector by making most of its technical expertise in optical lens and cooperating with LED light bulb maker Philips Lumileds.

The two companies have introduced LED streetlights that use Philips Lumileds' LUXEON Rebel light bulbs. Genius Electronics will begin to ship the lights by the end of 2009.

Industry watchers believed the contract would help facilitate Genius Electronics' effort to make inroad into the mainland market. The company is operating a factory in Xiamen of Fujian Province, making it close to the world's fastest-growing market.

Beijing has made widespread of LED streetlights across the mainland a part of its energy-saving policy and vowed to install tens of thousands of the lights in some 10 major cities in the mainland including Xiamen.

Genius Chairman T.C. Chen stressed that optical-lens design is an essential block of LED streetlight, reasoning why even Philips buys lens from the company for its LED lighting products.

Genius' LED-lighting business, Chen noted, has a research and development team of over 50 specialists. The business, he added, will expand into indoor light segment from outdoor light segment.

Besides lighting business, the company has also begun supplying lens for high-pixel digital cameras built in iPods and iPhones.

Industry watchers estimated lenses for LED lighting and smartphones to become the company's major revenue drivers in 2010.
