Taiwan's 5 Major Power Supply Firms to Raise Prices Starting May

2010/05/10 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, May 10, 2010 (CENS)--In response to material shortage first seen in the line in the decade, Taiwan's top five suppliers of power supplies, namely Delta Electronics Inc., Lite-On Technology Corp., AcBel Polytech Inc., Phihong Technology Co. and FSP Technology Inc., all have decided to raise their product prices this month.

The recent severe shortage of key components and parts, such as capacitors, resistor components, analog IC chips, transformers and chokes, for power supplies have shocked the sector and related downstream industries of PCs, servers, TVs, network devices, etc.

To respond to the material shortage, Delta, the largest supplier of power supplies for notebook PCs in the world, has raised prices of some of its existing product lines, while FSP and AcBel Polytech have also decided to adjust upward their quotations of power supplies. Some of these power supply firms' major clients are even willing to afford higher prices in exchange for rush orders.

In the meantime, Lite-On has also cautiously raised prices of certain categories amid the material shortage to minimize complaints from clients. However, the price hikes seem not to halt downstream clients' demand, as, for example, AcBel Polytech's consumer power supplies, of which the price is raised by around 10%, are still heavily ordered, according to industry insiders.

Presently, Taiwanese suppliers together supply 80% of needed power supplies for notebook PCs worldwide, and 50% of those for PCs, LCD TVs and servers. Therefore, some pointed out that impact of the material shortages and price hikes in the line is extensive and considerable to related downstream industries.
