Taiwan Machinery Makers' Export Grows 47.3% in First Six Months

Taipei, Sept. 13, 2010 (CENS)--Taiwan's machinery industry exported US$7.802 billion of machinery in the first six months, for a 47.3% year-on-year growth, according to customs-cleared statistics compiled by the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI).

Machine tools led with export value reaching US$1.27 billion in the first six months, up 46% from a year earlier; followed by plastics and rubber processing machines with US$534.19 million, up 64%; with special-purpose machines being third with US$514.59 million, up 49.3%. (See table below)

China was the largest export outlet by absorbing US$2.598 billion of Taiwan-made machinery in the first six months, for an year-on-year growth of 85.3% and accounting for 33.3% of the total exports. The U.S. was second with US$1.194 billion, up 25.7% and commanding 15.3%. Japan was third with US$411.61 million, up 5.1% and accounting for 5.3%.

Other major export outlets, in descending order, were Thailand (US$269.92 million, up 45.6%), Vietnam (US$254.85 million, up 46.5%), and Indonesia (US$240.79 million, up 80.3%).

The TAMI's tallies also show Taiwan imported US$12.166 billion of machinery in the first six months, up 99% from a year earlier.

Machinery for ICs and semiconductors led with import value of US$5.973 billion in the first six months, up 230% year-on-year and accounting for 49.1% of the total imports; followed by special-purpose machinery with US$1.025 billion, up 56.5% and commanding 8.4%; with pumps, compressors and fans at the third place with US$582.52 million, up 74% and accounting for 4.8%. Japan was the island's largest import supplier by selling US$4.895 billion of machinery to Taiwan in the first six months, up 74.6% year-on-year and accounting for 40.2% of the total imports; followed by the U.S. with US$2.626 billion, up 161% and commanding 21.6%; with China at the third place with US$1.111 billion, up 77.5% and commanding 9.1%.

Other major import sources, in descending order, were Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, Italy, United Kingdom, and France.
