Taipei, Jan. 6, 2011 (CENS)--The Taiwan-based Asustek Computer Inc., a globally leading PC vendor, has debuted its newest smart TV platform WAVI Xtion at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) running from Jan. 6 to 9 in Las Vegas, joining the global market for such instruments.

Known as the “cousin” for Microsoft's Kinect, a controller-free gaming device, due to functional similarity, WAVI Xtion uses PrimeSense's dual-camera 3D depth sensing technology to gauge shape, allowing users to control their PCs and digital home theater devices with physical motions.

Besides, the WAVI system, based on cloud computing technology, can also link computers with TVs wirelessly as a smart TV platform. The innovative product is expected to place Asustek in a competitive position in the global market for smart TVs.

With WAVI Xtion slated for launch in the second quarter of 2011 worldwide, Asustek has also planned to open “Xtion Online Store,” in a bid to quickly gain its global market shares by satisfying its WAVI Xtion users with more application software and related services. Noteworthily, the firm has also planned to release Xtion PRO, a software development platform, in February to attract software developers to join its smart TV business.

In addition, the firm has also brought its newest 12.1-inch "Eee Pad Slate" to 2011 CES, which, selling for US$999 to US$1,099 per unit, uses Intel's Core i5 processor and runs on Microsoft Windows 7. Although more expensive than Apple Inc.'s iPad, the tablet features better computing performance, seen as Asustek's ace in the hole to compete in the fast-growing market for tablet PCs.

The firm has also debuted an “economical” tablet, Eee Pad Transformer, at the show, which, priced at about US$399 and above, is powered by Nvidia's Tegra 2 dual-core processor, runs on Google's Android operating system and features a longer battery life of 16 hours.
