Taipei, Nov. 30, 2011 (CENS)--Affected by shortages of hard drives resulting from floods in Thailand, global PC shipment has been widely estimated to decline 20% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012.
With available inventories of hard drives held by PC makers gradually drying up, industry insiders indicated that the coming shortages will start to impact the whole industry in mid-December or around the end of the month, and become significantly troubled a month later.
Seagate, a globally large-sized supplier of hard drives, has also justified the coming shortages, indicating that the global supply of the PC components will sharply decrease by over 30% from 180 million units estimated initially in the fourth quarter of this year due to the flood crisis.
In regard of the increasingly severe shortages along with the upcoming Lunar New Year next January, market observers said that this will make lots of sense that PC manufacturers will step up producing as most products planned for the coming months as they can in December, in efforts to cushion the impacts. This, in turn, will cause global PC shipment to drastically plunge next January compared to a month ago, and post a 10-20% yearly drop in the first quarter of the year, predicted the observers.
To better cope with predicable shipment declines and protect their profitability, many PC brands and manufacturers have stated that they will use most of available hard drives to produce more valuable products, such as commercial laptops, instead of thin-margin netbook PCs and consumer models.
Downstream manufacturers and vendor's expected business downturns will also bring on domino effects for parts suppliers across the industry, with a number of Taiwanese companies of DRAM, thermal dissipation modules, connectors and battery packs already take pessimistic views of their business performance in the first quarter of next year. Worse, some have also been forced by customers to cut parts prices. This heralds the industry to be in a deeper depression in the coming quarter.
