Pegatron Reportedly Wins Lenovo's Order for New Tablet PCs

2011/12/20 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, Dec. 20, 2011 (CENS)--Pegatron Corp., a major EMS (electronics manufacturing services) provider based in Taiwan, has reportedly won orders for new-generation four-core tablet PCs from Chinese vendor Lenovo.

Industry sources said that Pegatron is scheduled to begin shipment of such PCs to Lenovo in April or May, 2012. Pegatron, however, refused to comment on individual customer and product model.

Lenovo's new tablet PC model focuses mainly on the medium- to low-price market. Thanks to Lenovo's well-established sales channels in China and good brand image, sales of the new product have been smooth. According to market-research firms' data, Lenovo won a 20.3% share of the Chinese tablet PC market in November 2011, trailing only the No. 1 iPad's 25.7%. Korean brand Samsung and Taiwanese brand Asus won market shares of 8.6% and 4.2%, respectively, in November.

Market research firms in China pointed out that more than 10 million tablet PCs are expected to be sold in China in 2012, meaning that Lenovo would sell at least two million units of such device.

Jason Cheng, Pegatron's CEO, said previously that the tablet PC is a major market trend. Currently, Apple's iPad is still dominating the global tablet market, while Android-camp models have been trying hard to win more shares.

Pengatron contract supplies the Transformer tablet to Asus already, and has won tablet PC orders from Toshiba and Acer as well. The Taiwan-based EMS provider is also actively trying to win contact order for Apple's iPad3.
