Panel Supplier Wintek to Introduce Own-brand LED Bulbs in Taiwan

2012/06/20 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, June 20, 2012 (CENS)--After two years of work, Wintek Corp., a major supplier of small- and medium-sized liquid crystal display (LCD) and touch panels, recently announced marketing of its own line of "Otali" LED light-bulbs in Taiwan.

Industry sources say that Wintek will launch 10W full-spectrum LED bulbs in Taiwan by July to be, according to Wintek, very price competitive.

Wintek will try to take market share from Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd., a LED packager that launched the "Everlight" line of LED bulbs. To achieve targeted market share in Taiwan, Everlight launched an 8W LED bulb priced at only NT$299 (US$10), which became very popular in Taiwan, but then raised the unit price to NT$349 (US$12).

Wintek says that the prices of its LED bulbs will be very competitive with all the LEDs to be supplied by Taiwanese companies, rather than defects from Korean or Chinese suppliers; while its strong optical design capabilities applied in touch panels will achieve better quality.

Hyley Huang, chairman and president of Wintek, says that most local companies focus on either product assembly or LED packaging, but lack the core illumination design ability; while Wintek, via in-house vertical integration, self develops the key optical design and driver ICs to assure top quality.

Industry sources say that consumers are the greatest beneficiaries amid underselling rivalry among players in the LED-bulb market.
