Acer of Taiwan Ranks 4th in Global PC Market Share

Taipei, Aug. 6, 2012 (CENS)--Industry analyst Canalys says that Apple Inc., the U.S.-based PC brand, replaced Hewlett-Packard (HP) to be the leading global PC (including tablet computers) vendor with a significant 19.4% market share in the second quarter, largely due to its release of the iPad, with HP, Lenovo Group, Acer Inc., and Dell Inc. following from the second to fifth, with 12.5%, 12.1%, 9.8%, and 8.9%, respectively in market share.

Despite global economic volatility and yet-realized effect of Microsoft's Windows 8, Canalys still predicts the PC market scale to hit a new high this year, especially for makers providing innovative products.

Canalys says that shipments of PCs (including tablets) grew by 12% year on year (YoY) during the second quarter, mainly due to robust sales of tablets including Apple's new iPad, Asus's “Transformer” series, Samsung's “Galaxy Tab” series, successfully making up for the unexpectedly dull sales of “Ultrabook,” a high-end laptop from Intel.

Tablet shipments globally totaled 24 million units in the second quarter, up 75% YoY to account for 22% of all PC shipments, also higher than the first quarter's 19%.
