Taiwan' s makers of household decorative products are now able to supply a wide variety of plastic and metal items to meet the differing needs of customers all over the world, thanks to an abundant supply of raw materials and hardware.

Manufacturers in the line claim that the accumulation of many years of experience gives them the ability to provide total solutions for whatever home-decoration problems their customers might encounter.

The producers have constantly utilized the advanced production equipment and most highly skilled designers to develop and manufacture innovative products that cater to the tastes of customers in industrially advanced nations.

Wide Product Range

One of the leaders in the household decorative-product line is Taiwan Hwan Yi Industries Co., which was established in 1981 and today uses integrated production facilities to turn out raw materials and finished products. The integrated equipment ensures quality in the doors, decorated with fancy trim, that are the company's pride.

The doors follow worldwide trends in durability, fashion, and multiple colors, and are widely applied in kitchen cabinets, living rooms, and offices.

In its initial stage, Taiwan Hwan Yi concentrated on plastic and aluminum trim for electronic products. Later on, it added equipment for the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) trim for computer tables, coffeetables, cabinets, and corner posts.

Ten years ago the company set up a factory in Chungli, in the northern Taiwan county of Taoyuan, for the production of doors, profile and skirt trim, and photo and picture frames, among other items.

Its present product range encompasses five categories: furniture (PVC edge bands, finished doors, wall seal profiles, aluminum profiles, roller shutter slates, and T-molding profiles); building materials (skirt trim, ceiling profiles, and decorative trim); picture frames; automotive accessories (windshield molding); and bicycle accessories (fenders and mudguards).

The T-molding profiles are applicable to office furniture, bedroom sets, and dining tables, especially computer desks, conference tables, and dining room accessories. Melamine resin-impregnated decorative paper and medium density fiberboard are imported from Germany to ensure the high quality of these products.

Advanced Machines for Versatile Products

Dah Shan Plastics Co., founded in 1989, specializes in the production of irregularly shaped PVC extruded products. The firm boasts years of accumulated know-how and process upgrading, as well as ISO9001 certification, and now offers a wide range of knock/down PVC drawer parts and decorative trim as well as other items. These products are used in a number of manufacturing industries including furniture, building materials, electronics, medical equipment, transportation equipment, and machinery.

Dah Shan' s 36, 000-square-foot factory in the central Taiwan county of Taichung employs 30 workers and turns out 200 tons of irregularly shaped plastic-extrusion products a month.

The company' s drawer parts are specially designed for steel computer desks and other furniture items, and the flexibility of its in-house R&D team facilitates the development of parts in any size designated by the customers. The team creates at least one new item per month, and has recently unveiled successes in the area of bathroom cabinets made of engineering plastic and glass.

There are 15 state-of-the-art production lines to turn out parts made of both soft and rigid plastics, including ABS, HIPS, PE, PP, PVC, PS, NBR, TPE, and TPR. The parts are available in a variety of colors and grains, and in sizes up to 120mm wide and 18mm thick.

Advanced manufacturing machines imported from Japan in recent years have helped the company to develop plastic parts that feature bright colors as well as moisture and rot resistance. In addition to their enhanced capabilities, the new machines also provide reduced production costs and strengthened international competitiveness.

Dah Shan' s managers believe that the best product quality and comprehensive after-sales services are the keys to competitiveness. The company claims to have established a solid reputation in the Southeast Asian market and is now seeking market development in Japan, Latin America, Europe, and the United States.

A Pioneer Still Going Strong

One of the pioneers of Taiwan' s wooden furniture industry is Nanya Furniture Industrial Co., established back in 1961. Today, as always, the company is committed to the development of innovative products that meet the ever-changing needs of customers all over the world.

All of Nanya' s products were made in Taiwan until the fourth quarter of last year, when a new plant was inaugurated in Vietnam. Production is now being shifted to the new facility, although packaging operations are being kept in Taiwan.

The company currently concentrates on turning out such items as compact-disk racks and storage racks, Japanese-style tables, mirrors, screens, and screen windows.

A recent success came with the development of wooden fence-style screens, which have now gone into production. The company believes that with their friendliness to nature and their classical styling, as well as their availability in a wide array of colors, these new products are attractive to customers throughout the world.

Company president Su Jen-tsung says that Nanya can ship products from either Vietnam or Taiwan, as the customer wishes. The products go mainly to Europe (where one of its main buyers is the Swedish-based Ikea), the U.S., and Southeast Asia.

The company's 43 workers can turn out 105, 000 units of wooden furniture per month, with unit prices ranging from US$10 to US$150. (May 2004)
