Design Awards a First at HK International Lighting Fair

Only six winners, four from Taiwan and two from H.K., picked from 140 entries

One of the many first-time activities at the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) this year, held Oct. 27-30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, was the Hong Kong International Lighting Products Award 2012.

Benjamin Chau, Acting Executive Director of organizer Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), stressed that the award aims to inspire exhibitors to develop more unique designs and offer buyers the latest trends in lighting design.

Over 140 designs were submitted for the competition and were divided into light source, architectural/commercial lighting, decorative indoor lighting and outdoor lighting categories.

With each participant permitted to enter three designs, the judging panel evaluated the products on design quality, practical functionality, product safety and market potential; while the HKTDC handed out the “Most Innovative Award”, “Best ECO Design Award”, and “Best Hong Kong Design Award.”

The judging panel was made up of Professor Kam‐tai Chan of Department of Electronic Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Raymond Chiu, Principal Consultant of Automotive & Electronics Division, Hong Kong Productivity Council; Associate Professor Tse‐ming Chung of Department of Building Services Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Chairman Francis Lee of Hong Kong Designers Association; Chairman Ir Victor Ng of Electronics Division, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers; Koichi Tanaka, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Lightlinks International Limited as well as Chief Lighting Consultant of LED Artist Limited; Stanley Yim, JP, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association.

Six designs were chosen as winners, four of which being from Taiwan and the rest from Hong Kong.

Best of the Fair Award for “Light Source”
Designer: Neonlite Electronic & Lighting (HK) Limited

Name of Product: MEGAMAN® TECOH®MHx

Product Concept : The patented MEGAMAN®TECOH®MHx module utilizes two axially mounted multichip LED arrays, combined with a reflector, to deliver very precise directional light with even distribution and minimal glare. Designer: Ledoux Lighting Company Limited (Hong Kong)

Name of Product: Vali LED Table Lamp

Product Concept : The Vali LED Table Lamp is inspired by the robot “Vali” in an animation movie. Box shaped, the light has a head that can be pulled up to reveal smart and lovely “Vali” with eyes (two 360° rotatable LEDs), with oxidized metal housing preventing scratch damage, built‐in USB to allow the lamp to function and be charged at once.

Best of the Fair Award for “Decorative Indoor Lighting”

Designer: Xcellent Products International Limited (Taiwan)

Name of Product: Star Pendant

Product Concept: Xcellent overcame limitations on traditional lamps to create the first unique flat lamp: the Multi‐Blade series. Each individual blade is slim and compact. The modular design allows blades to stand alone as lamps or be combined to form stunning fixtures for different lighting purposes. Minimal glare and indirect illumination eliminate the need for heavy shades and diffusers. The star pendant is perfect for residential, commercial or office lighting.

Best of the Fair Award for “Outdoor Lighting”

Designer: Vaxcel International Company Limited (Taiwan)

Name of Product: Wall Wash Motion Sensing LED Security Light

Product Concept: An outdoor security light with all-in-one ambient wall wash effect, energy saving and security features. The lamp has two light sources: main security light and up/down ambient light, with the latter staying on from dusk to dawn to create a dramatic wall wash, the main light turning on upon motion detection, and time delay and motion sensitivity being adjustable.

Most Innovative Award
Designer: Xcellent Products International Limited (Taiwan)

Name of Product: Singleblade

Product Concept: The Singleblade is a simple, modern, and beautiful lamp projecting even illumination through its patented optical-grade acrylic light diffuser. An integrated touch sensor gives users four options of brightness. Power can be supplied through either an AC adapter or internal rechargeable batteries.

Best ECO Design Award

Designer: Comet International Corp. (Taiwan)

Name of Product: LED Lantern

Product Concept: The LED Lantern is designed for both indoor and outdoor applications. Featuring four lighting modes: flash, change each second, change every eight seconds, and change by music, users can change the mode or color either by pressing a button or remote control. The flashing mode can also be synchronized with music. With ergonomic grip, handy and firm shape, high efficiency power supply and waterproof design, it is also suitable for outdoor use.
