The traditional lighting market is on the slump , but the adoption of LED clearly rose, rising at a compound annual growth rate of 15.5%. In addition to raising the feasibility of smart lighting, LED lighting will also bring about tremendous changes in the market's business model, paving way for new business opportunities in the lighting industry.

Apart from LED's point light source, the advantages behind OLED's surface-type light source, such as less power consumption and reduces harm to eyesight makes it a solution with vast potential.. The smart light system was first introduced to several industries, including the industrial industry, commercial construction and government agencies. The next step is to introduce and further incorporate green and smart lighting into the consumers' household lighting options.

The research report of the market research institute pointed out that the largest market for smart lighting is Europe, largely concentrated in areas like commercial buildings, outdoor lighting, and automotive applications; the second largest market is North America, which has attracted more and more local LED firms to invest in developing intelligent lighting products, while the Asian-Pacific market is regarded as the most promising emerging market.

The latest estimation from think-tank UBI Research indicates that the OLED global market is expected to grow to $1.9 billion by 2021, and continue its fast growth to reach $5.8 billion by 2025 with a CAGR of 85%. Therefore, assuming Taiwan's OLED industry can keep up with the local LED industry growth rate, the OLED industry would be on par with both solid-state lighting and LED industry.

Industrial Technology Research Institute Industry, Science and Technology International Strategy Center analyst Huang Meng-jiao said that "smart lighting" refers to the integration of technologies such as solid state, sensors, communication technology and software control systems. By collecting data from sensors and sharing big data analysis, smart lighting could continue to serve as a highly efficient lighting solution.

Huang Meng-jiao pointed out that the sales of traditional lighting products mainly centers on outright purchase, and the smart lighting aims to expand the services. At present, government's public infrastructure such as smart street lamps, or government's demonstration field are still adopting the business model based on the private financing proposal (PFI) procurement system or ESCO, and has not yet reached an innovative business model derived for smart lighting.

The OLED automotiveeco-friendly light developed by ITRI and DEPO has removed the necessity for light guide plates, making it easier for assembly, and comes with non-glare, thin and lightweight characteristics which helps increase trunk space. This particular product is a step to entering a niche market in the lighting industry, and has garnered attention from high-end automakers.
