In response to the needs of major car manufacturers worldwide to reduce carbon emissions and extend the battery life of electric vehicles, Taiwan's China Steel has been actively engaged in the development of lightweight car bodies in recent years.

China Steel reported that it has successfully developed a new generation of automotive steel, called MS1300, 2.2 times stronger than the structural steel used in the Taipei 101 building. The new steel has been made into bumper parts by domestic automobile AM parts manufacturers and sold to the American market.

China Steel said that the new generation of automotive steel MS1300 is ultra-high-strength steel that the company has invested in a large amount of research and development resources, combined with innovative metallurgical design and process technology, and overcame various bottlenecks to complete the development.

The material microstructure of MS1300 uses Martensite, rated as the most robust steel material on the market. China steel has developed self-tempering technology in the production process, increasing the strength to 130 kg, that the strength is 2.2 times that of the structural steel used in the Taipei 101 building. The bending radius is also lower than 2.5 times the thickness level, meeting the requirements of the roll forming method for automotive bumper parts.

The steel grade is rated for good formability and weldability, China Steel reported, having passed the product performance verification of cold processing and welding by domestic parts factories and achieving the goal of improving car body safety and weight reduction.

The company emphasized that to promote the development strategy of "high-value refined steel mills," the internal development of "precise steel products" is the main strategic area, focusing R&D resources towards eight major products, namely precision forging steel, high-value hand tool steel, high-performance structural steel, cutting-edge super-tough steel, green energy steel, advanced alloy carbon steel, cross-generation vehicle steel, and ultra-energy-efficient electromagnetic steel.

China Steel reported optimism behind the newly developed generation of super-strength steel automotive steel, has effectively reduced reliance on overseas imports of quality steel, and aided in transforming the industry.
