Taipei, Dec. 14, 2005 (CENS)--Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), Taiwan's No. 2 maker of large-sized thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels, announced that both its consolidated revenue and shipments in November hit record monthly highs due to strong demands from LCD TV and notebook PC applications.

CMO reported consolidated revenue of NT$18.65 billion (US$556.75 million) in November, an increase of 6.9% from the previous month and 96.8% from the same period of last year. Excluding the revenue of its Japanese subsidiary, International Display Technology Inc., or IDTech), CMO booked revenue of NT$18.3 billion (US$546.27 million) last month.

CMO and IDTech together shipped 2.55 million large-sized TFT-LCD panels last month, up 5.0% month-on-month and 81.5% year-on-year.

CMO attributes its market-beating revenue growth to its early deployment in the panel industry and to its stable customer base. The company said that even if demands for notebook PC and LCD monitors begin slowing down in December, CMO could still shift part of its capacity to the production of LCD TV panels.

According to industry sources, however, despite the growth of CMO's revenue and shipments, the company still faces a shortage of cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) tubes, a key part of the backlight modules used in LCD TVs. The sources added that the shortage would continue to hinder CMO's future sales growth, as major CCFL suppliers are not expanding their capacities fast enough to catch up with increasing demand.

The November business report was not so rosy for CMO's major rival, AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), the No. 1 large-size TFT-LCD panel maker in Taiwan. AUO registered revenue of NT$24.21 billion (US$722.6 million) last month, rising only 0.9% from October. Industry sources attributed AUO's relatively minor revenue growth to the slowing of notebook PC and monitor demand at the end of the year.
